PKI and CKM® Scaling Study
Real-time, secure collaboration and information sharing requires authentication and authorization mechanisms that are flexible, trustworthy, reliable, and easy-to-use. A collection of tools, protocols, and policies termed Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology is gaining wide acceptance for authenticating and securing transactions for diverse services. A complementary technology called Constructive Key Management® (CKM®), developed by TecSec® Inc., is gaining acceptance in the government and commercial realms for secure document sharing.

These two technologies meet many needs for Navy operational security services. However, because an accurate scaling assessment is needed to understand the best position for these technologies, NCSA is working with InfoAssure to perform a PKI & CKM Scaling Study as a part of the NCASSR project. The study will evaluate the scalability of key management and resource administration capabilities of PKI and CKM technologies against Department of Defense (DoD) requirements and scenarios.

The results of the work will guide enhancements to existing tools and standards. They will also enable the establishment of common methodologies for managing protecting, and sharing information in collaborative environments.

Strong community engagement strengthens cybersecurity research and development
NCASSR-supported exploratory research at NCSA and elsewhere has sparked additional external funding and development opportunities as well as successful deployment and adoption by users ranging from the defense sector to state law enforcement to the utilities industry.
 
NCASSR Collaborator Goes To Washington
Carl Gunter, a professor in the University of Illinois Department of Computer Science and a project lead on NCASSR-supported work involving adaptive, secure messaging, recently spoke to an audience of congressional staffers and lobbyists on Capitol Hill regarding ways to address a variety of critical cybersecurity issues in areas such as healthcare and energy distribution.
